Rocky Mountain National Park is situated in Northern Colorado near Estes Park. It is composed of more than 260,000 acres of natural lands that offer majestic mountain views, fields of wildflowers, over 300 miles of hiking trails, starry nights under wide-open skies, and sightings of many species of mammals, birds, and reptiles.
President Woodrow Wilson established Rocky Mountain National Park in 1916. Today the park protects many different animals and ecosystems. Because of the range of elevations in the park, there are different climates that create different ecosystems such as mountain tundra and lush forests. The Colorado River gets its start in this park and it is also home to the Continental Divide which splits the park into two areas with different characteristics.
Rocky Mountain National Park enjoys distinct seasons throughout the year. The temperatures in the summer can soar into the 90s, and thunderstorms are common. Snow begins to fall in mid-October and generally lasts all winter. In the higher elevations, snow can linger until July, but in most of the park, the snow season usually ends in mid-April. During the winter months, some of the trails and roads are closed because they are buried under deep snow.
In addition to enjoying the beautiful park on foot while backpacking or cross-country skiing, visitors can also enjoy the scenery by car. There are scenic mountain roads with occasional lookout points that let guests take in majestic panoramic views of the snow-capped mountains and wooded valleys below.
